Does translation matter?

Protestant reformers believed the Bible should be accessible to all the faithful so they could access the word of God directly.  Conservative authorities believed translating the Bible into the vernacular (everyday language) was dangerous and irreverent.  When reformers like Martin Luther undertook to translate the Bible, they found that the way scripture was translated WAS important.

Your assignment is to locate a verse of the Bible that significantly changes meaning according to the translation (Website with multiple translations of the Bible).  Post a comment on this blog with your answers to the following questions:
1. Give two translations of the verse that differ significantly.
2. How do the differences between the verses lead to different doctrinal interpretations?

Reformation video link

Watch Part 3 of the Medici series to see how the Medici family gained control of the papacy itself (the office of the pope) and how such corruptions spawned the Protestant Reformation.

Renaissance Art Poem

Please select a work of art by one of the following Renaissance artists. Study the work, learn about the artist, find out who or what inspired the work.  Observe the work closely, noticing the details.  Your job is to compose a poem based on the work of art.  The poem should be at least 12 lines long.

Beginning poets often struggle with rhyming, because the rhymes sound forced and sing-songy (like a nursery rhyme), so for this assignment, do not rhyme.  Instead, focus on creating mental pictures for your reader.  Use comparisons (similes and metaphors).  Make a list of different words and phrases that you like as you think about the work of art.  Free associate (let your mind wander).  Have fun!

Your poem is due Tuesday by 7:30 am.  You should submit the poem using Googledocs (share it with me: brigham.dye@maeserprep.org).  Along with your poem, please include a picture of the work of art that inspired it.
